From MuseScore to Tocata
Tocata opens MusicXML (.mxl, .musicxml, .xml) and MIDI files. The most common way to get a MusicXML file is MuseScore. It takes a minute.
In MuseScore Studio (desktop, free)
- Open the score in MuseScore Studio 4.
- Go to File › Export.
- Under Format, pick MusicXML. Keep the main score checked, not the separate parts, so both hands come along.
- If you are asked for a file type, pick compressed (
.mxl). It is smaller, and Tocata opens both. - Click Export… and save the file.
In MuseScore 3 the path is the same: File › Export, then Compressed MusicXML (*.mxl) as the file type.
On musescore.com
- Open the score page and tap Download.
- Pick MusicXML.
A free account can download public-domain scores and original compositions; the rest need a MuseScore PRO subscription. These are musescore.com rules and may change.
On Tocata
- Open Tocata and tap Open sheet music, or drop the file on the screen.
- Pick the file you exported. It stays on your device: nothing is uploaded.
- Play along. Split the hands, loop the hard part, slow it down, or let the music wait for you.
Why MusicXML and not MIDI?
MusicXML keeps both staves. Tocata plays the top staff as the right hand and the bottom one as the left, and sheet mode only works with MusicXML. With MIDI, Tocata guesses the hand from the tracks or from the pitch.
Got an error?
- Export it again from MuseScore. Hand-made files or files from other programs sometimes use a layout Tocata cannot read.
- Still stuck? Write to contato@tocata.app and tell us what happened.
Only open and share scores you have the right to use. No file at hand? Tocata comes with public-domain pieces to start with.
